Review COBRA THE IMPALER ‘Colossal Gods’

Cobra The Impaler is the brainchild of ex-Aborted guitarist Tace DC who, together with four brothers in crime, started the outfit. ‘Colossal Gods’ is the title of the album the quintet had in the making and that has found its way to the record stores.

To realize his musical project, Tace looked for companions and he found quite experienced and passionate bandmates. Internationally known Dirk Verbeuren is contributing to the album as well as singers Manuel Remmerie and Mike Def, both more rooted in the Belgian metal scene.

‘Colossal Gods’ is an interesting piece of music and I don’t mean this in a doubtful fashion. It isn’t that easy to put a label to the sound of this five-piece band and in the end it might not even be important. Cobra The Impaler is sound-wise connected to the New Wave of American Heavy Metal. It’s Tace’s contemporary interpretation of heavy metal that is always powerful and dynamic. Next to the traditional roots, the quintet also includes some thrash metal elements into their sound as well as there is a lot of groove entailed. Examples are the thundering ‘Spirit of Lyssa’ and grooving ‘Blood Eye’, the latter representing a great combination of a blasting verse and a melodic chorus. In a way the song combines many aspects of Cobra The Impaler’s music.

Although the different ingredients of ‘Colossal Gods’ are known and not new, the blending of all these sources of inspiration is what makes the album to an entertaining experience for listeners. There are constantly twists and turns, providing variation without losing the context of sound and album. ’Colossal Gods’ might not be the next big thing, but the album is a refreshing interpretation of heavy metal that is worth to be listened to.
