Review HIGH FIGHTER ‘Live at WDR Rockpalast’

The pandemic and the connected measures have clearly shown the importance of live music. In moments when something that seems to be a given is gone, one values it much more than in times of opulence. But this time also unveiled creative moments for music, although in a different format.

German TV station WDR had with Rockpalast a well-established live music format. With no usual live shows ongoing, the Rockpalast team started with Rockpalast OFFLINE a new format that was slightly different to the standard. The ‘Rockpalast Corona Sessions’ was series of concerts with bands that played at special places without any audience.

One of the bands that performed such a concert was High Fighter. The Hamburg-based sludge metal powerhouse performed a concert in August 2020, surrounded by the breath-taking scenery of the Landschaftspark Duisburg. Without audience and under strict COVID rules, the band played eight songs which will be unleashed these days as the band’s first live album.

‘Live at WDR Rockpalast’ is the title of the album that reflects the musical history of the band in a good fashion. Songs like the mighty ‘Black Waters’ reflect the beginning of the band, a tune taken from the 2014 EP ‘The Goat Rituals’. Mona Miluski’s hoarse vocals and screams are dominant during this phase of the band and along the way, the clean vocals took over a bit more space. High Fighter premiered in 2016 with ‘Scars & Crosses’ and one of the songs that has been played in Duisburg is ‘Down to the Sky’, moderate paced smasher with mainly clean vocals.

The latest album ‘Champain’ is represented by a few songs too, of which the immense ‘When We Suffer’ is one and the racing closer ‘Shine Equal Dark’ is another. The latter is a brutal sludge metal inferno, showing that the band still has the roots very present in their current sound.

‘Live at WDR Rockpalast’ is a special album, recorded in a special time and reflecting an unusual live event. High Fighter might have had different ideas when it comes to their first live album, but instead of having a regular live release it is this special time that allowed for a record that is also a witness of an unusual period.
