Spirit Adrift, hailing from Phoenix, Arizona started in 2015 with a debut album that hit the shelves one year later. Being young and motivated means that the guys released to date four full-length longplayers with the latest one being entitled ‘Enlightened in Eternity’.
Spirit Adrift is the brainchild of Nate Garrett who teamed up with his bandmate Marcus Bryant with the mission to provide some doom-based heavy metal songs to the fans of crushing metal. As many other bands also Spirit Adrift faced some unexpected extra time after cleaning out the agendas in March 2020. Focusing on work on new songs led to three new tunes that will be released as an EP entitled ‘Forge Your Future’. Nostalgia, metal and doom are the main ingredients of this release that starts off with the title track. Hailing the heydays of the 80s, Spirit Adrift presents a song with some classical metal influences. A slowly pounding beat is the base for this great song, that provides a great riff a melodic vocals. The song is like a journey back in time with a dark and mourning expression.
The second track is called ‘Wake Up’ and one could have the impression that Garrett listened a lot to the earlier Ozzy Osbourne when being busy with the songwriting. Typical Ozzy riffing is a main factor of this tune that shows some ‘Crazy Train’ references. And we are coming already towards the end of this EP. ‘Invisible Enemy’ is the seven-minute closing chapter on this release and the duo shows again where their passion is at home. It’s a thundering metal track that showcases some songwriting skills. It’s a well-forged metal anthem that rounds off this EP with style.
‘Forged Your Future’ is a release that presents the beauty of classical heavy metal. The songs are good, and I also have to say that a more vital and vivid approach would have added an extra portion of power to this release. Sometimes one can get the impression of the handbrake is not being fully released. However, traditionalists and fans of 80s metal should check out this release for sure.
