Review SODOM ‚Bombenhagel‘

Ruhrpott thrash metal legend Sodom has a new EP in the starting blocks. On August 20th, Tom Angelripper and bandmates will unveil with ‚Bombenhagel‘ a new disc that not only features a re-recorded version of the classic, but also includes with ‚Coup de Grace‘ and ‚Pestiferous Posse‘ two new tracks, rounding off a pretty well done EP.

As everybody, also Sodom originally had different plans before the pandemic hit the world. Still the quartet kept its vitality and agility and even-though the EP was planned to be released in parallel with some summer festivals for 2021, all cancelled and postponed to 2022, ‚Bombenhagel‘ will still see the light of day. On the one hand it is a strong sign of live like „Hej, we are still there“ and on the other hand it is new material for fans that makes their life hopefully more thrilling.

‚Bombenhagel’ originally is part of the legendary ‚Persecution Mania‘ album from 1987. It was the bands second longplayer with the song being a springboard for broader attention. The new line-up adds some extra power to the song and two guitars allow a bit more flexibility too. In addition, also Harris Johns is on board again. Johns already provided a guitar solo for the original version and does it again in 2021, just a bit different.

‚Coup De Grace‘ is next and is a massive riff feast. The tune is a pure thrash metal pearl, raw and unpolished. Lyrically the song addresses the blow of death in a metaphorical way, meaning mankind working towards towards its own blow of death through climate change, wars and so on.

The third song, ‚Pestiferous Posse‘, is guiding toward the Wild West by telling the story of the famous shooting at O.K. Corral in 1881. Also here parallels are drawn with today, when persistent battles between rivals get out of control. Musically the track is another brachial thrash metal track that  showcases a band that is nearly 40 years in business and still sounds fresh, brutal and vital.

‚Bombenhagel‘ is not only a classic, penned by Sodom, it now also stands for an EP that can be seen as a bridge until live shows will be possible again and at the same time shortens the waiting time for a next full-length album. This EP is a next thrilling step in Sodom‘s impressive career and for sure not the final chapter.
