CD review TODD MICHAEL HALL ‘Sonic Healing’

Vocalist Todd Michael Hall is certainly no stranger to rock and metal, as he enriches the Riot V releases with his voice. His time with Jack Starr’s Burning Star is also unforgotten and this time Hall has decided to work with another excellent guitarist. Metal Church mainman Kurdt Vanderhoof not only produced Hall’s solo album ‘Sonic Healing’ but was also involved in the songwriting.

In a way, the title of the album reflects its making. In a time without concerts, work on an album was like a kind of sonic healing for all involved. And instead of staying in the valley of tears, the singer used the time to set a positive signal and a positive vibe with his solo album.

The boundaries between rock and metal are fluid on ‘Sonic Healing’. Everything is based on Hall’s and Vanderhoof’s passion for classic rock as we know it from Boston, Foreigner and REO Speedwagon. Building on these influences, songs have been written that have a life of their own.

There is, for example, the calmly beginning ‘like No Other’, which turns into a grooving rocker. Also recommended is the roaring opener ‘Overdrive’, a song that immediately catches the ear. With ‘Running After You’ Hall’s solo release also has a more soulful component where the mentioned classic rock bands have delivered the blueprint. This is real good-time music.

‘To the Bone’ brings true hard rock to the forefront and slowly we are already approaching the end of the record. ‘Long Lost Rock & Rollers’ is the successful finale of an album that spreads a good mood and is life-affirming. Here you have to push the ‘start’-button again.
