CD review CHEAP TRICK ‘In Another World’

One thing becomes crystal clear right away. The new Cheap Trick album brings a positive vibe to the plate that many of us need right here and now. It starts with the rocking and vibrant opener ‘The Summer Looks Good on You’. The irresistible melody catches your attention right away while the solo part manifests the fact of Cheap Trick being more than just a standard rock band. Instead, Cheap Trick belongs to the pioneers of rock music and managed to create timeless music over more than four decades.

Nearly four years after having released with ‘We’re All Right’, their so far latest album, Cheap Trick return with a new longplayer called ‘In Another World’, a title that can be interpreted in many ways. Of course, it was another world when the band started and premiered in 1977. For all of us, it was another world 13 months ago and the light-hearted swinging rock music provided by this album is another world too, compared to the great days of a pandemic winter season. Everybody is looking forward to longer days with sunshine and colors. Cheap Trick deliver the soundtrack to such a time to come.

Songs like the calmer ‘Another World’ and the following ‘Boys & Girls & Rock’n’Roll’ show the entire width of this new Cheap Trick record within a few minutes. Next to the wider musical approach, another benefit of the album is that Cheap Trick doesn’t get lost in longer songs. In contrary. The guys bring the spirit of rock to the point, manifested in tracks like the hard rocking ‘Light Up the Fire’. Instead of producing lengthy compositions, the approach of this album is to bundle the power into three minutes tunes and add thirteen of them to the tracklist.

With such a mindset, the album benefits from a lot of variety and a good flow which makes listening to ‘In Another World’ to a thrilling experience. What adds to the variety is the enthralling ‘Quit Waking Me Up’ with its Beatles-inspired vocal lines, as well as the balladic ‘So It Goes’ which reflects the soulful aspect of Cheap Trick in 2021. And talking about The Beatles, the closer ‘Gimme Some Truth’ is a cover of the John Lennon songs and faces a great remake on ‘In Another World’.

Cheap Trick always stayed true to themselves without standing still. Robin Zander and bandmates found their formula for good music with time-independent relevance. The new longplayer is a next chapter to a long story of Cheap Trick, an album that reflects the band 100%. ‘In Another World’ belongs into this world, more than ever.
