CD review ALTER BRIDGE ‘Walk the Sky 2.0’

The actual plan of Alter Bridge for 2020 included a massive tour schedule, which we all know didn’t happen. To not stand still, the quartet worked on an EP that tries to bring a live atmosphere to your home but also features with ‘Last Rites’ a new song.

Base for this EP are the live shows, Alter Bridge played in the early 2020. January and February still allowed to play live and after having gone through the recordings of these shows, six live songs have been distilled. These songs form the major part of track listing.

To not cross lines too much with earlier live albums, the band focus on the new songs from the latest album ‘Walk the Sky’, which explains the title of this EP. ‘Last Rites’, the new song, is a heavy one with Tremonti’s riffs in the forefront. The track was written during the lockdown. ‘Last Rites’ is a complex song that doesn’t unfold an earworm potential right away. Layers and twists demand an effort from the listener and certainly more than one spin on the recordplayer to reveal some joy. It’s a good song and at the same time not really a longlasting highlight in the books of Alter Bridge.

Fans will love the EP and people with an urgent need for live music might be attracted too. No doubt, ‘Walk the Sky 2.0’ features really good songs and yet feels like a spontaneous release to not lose momentum.
