CD review THE DAMNED ‘The Rockfield Files’ – EP

Rockfield Studios in Monmouth, Wales are an important place for The Damned. It was the home for the band while working on the important ‘The Black Album’ which was released in 1980. ‘The Black Album’ was a shift from the early punk rock days towards a more atmospheric sound. The Damned’s sound became darker and goth.

The Damned returned to Rockfield Studios in 2019. David Vanian, Captain Sensible and Paul Gray, together with Monty Oxymoron and Pinch, recorded the first new music since the 2018 album ‘Evil Spirits’.

‘The Rockfield Files’ contains four songs, reflecting a strong rock spirit that starts with ‘Keep ’em Alive’. It’s a lively start into this EP before the ‘Manipulator’ spreads its dark mood. With ‘Back is the Night’ a bittersweet anthem closes this EP.

‘The Rockfield Files’ stands for good rock music, delivered by pioneers that kept their passion for dark and gloomy music that never morphs into a feeling of hopelessness. Just excellently crafted rock that’s worth to listen to.
