DVD review STEVE HACKETT ‘Selling England by the Pound & Spectral Mornings: Live at Hammersmith’

The last show of Steve Hackett’s ‘Genesis Revisited 2019’-tour took place at Hammersmith Eventim Apollo in London, England. As the title of this tour announces, Hackett went back in time, days when he was guitarist with Genesis.

‘Selling England by the Pound’, originally released in 1973, is Genesis’ fifth full-length album and Hackett’s favorite record from this period. Therefor it’s not a surprise that the iconic guitarist decided to go on tour with the milestone release being the core of the set. Together with an excellent band, Hackett moved the album literally into the spotlight of the Hammersmith Eventim Apollo. Guys like Roger King, Jonas Reingold and others do an excellent job to let the song shine bright, not to forget Nad Sylvan who’s vocals are brilliant and fit perfectly to the sound of Genesis.

Next to ‘Selling England by the Pound’, being the centerpiece, the set also included songs from the all-time favorites ‘Spectral Mornings’ and ‘At the Edge of Light’, the first one contributing with six songs to the setlist.

‘Selling England by the Pound & Spectral Mornings: Live at Hammersmith’ is a live release that has the focus on the music, the songs and their perfect execution. The scenery supports this approach. There is not a lot of visual gimmicks and frills that diverts attention from the main subject. A well-done light show set the spotlight to support the music without competing with the excellent audio experience.

Usually a DVD release with all the visual impressions is a great experience for fans who couldn’t join the show. Since the music is in focus with’Selling England by the Pound & Spectral Mornings: Live at Hammersmith’, the viualisation is a nice extra treat but listening to the music and closing the eyes is certainly equally good as watching Steve Hackett and bandmates performing the music. However, fans of good music will appreciate both formats, each at its specific moment in time.
