If you read the name Döda Havet and you’re thought is that we’re talking about Extreme Metal, than you need to re-adjust you’re musical mindset before pressing the ‘Play’-button. The Swedes have nothing to do with any kind of musical boarder stretching when it comes to how extreme music can be played.
Instead, Döda Havet is rooted in Classic Rock and ‘Tid och rum’ (Time and Space) is their second release. Peter Garde Lindholm (guitar), Julia Stensland Vinrot (keyboard), Martin Pettersson (drums), Lawrence Mackrory (bass guitar) and Staffan Stensland Vinrot (vocals/guitar/songwriter) reveal eight new songs, all emotional tunes the show good craftsmanship.
‘Tid och rum’ isn’t a light-hearted album and at the same time it’s not darkened either. It’s more the emotional depth that is weave into the songs, catching you as a listener. And since all songs are kept in Swedish, the longplayer gives enough time and space to focus on the music. The single ‘Hjärnspöket’ is a good example for how the album is set up. The song is about the difficulty of the rational understanding of feelings, which is often pushed aside as a chimera. Musically, the theme is staged perfectly. I recommend the song as a starting point for discovering more of what the band has to offer.
Döda Havet‘s second release is a soulful, almost fragile one. Although equipped with some well-rocking and harder sections, it’s the emotional rollercoaster that provides the special atmosphere of this album.
