Are you a fan of the early Kreator? Yes? Then you should check out Slaughter Messiah from Belgium. The quartet (L. Sabathan, Rod Iron Bitch, T. Exhumator, J.B.) listened and still listens to bands like Kreator and Sodom too, at least where it seems the inspiration comes from.
‘Cursed to the Pyre’ is the debut album of the four-piece powerhouse and it’s a fierce one. Slaughter Messiah released already a couple of demos and a few EP but it’s the full-length album that showcases a next step for the band.
With songs like ‘Pouring Chaos’ the guys push the pedal to the metal. High tempo and furious leads is what you get, a song like a speed train without steering and brakes. What shows the songwriting skills though is the fact that the guys have quite some 5-6 minutes tracks on the album. With having these longer tracks in place the quartet still keeps control of what they are doing and never get ahead of themselves.
Tracks like ‘Hideous Affliction’ and ‘Pyre’ have enough substance to keep the energy level high. Aggressiveness, rage and musical creativity can go together, that’s what the four-piece shows on ‘Cursed to the Pyre’, an album that brings back an oldschool Thrash Metal vibe, something a few genre pioneers (and I don’t talk about Kreator in tis context) can hardly deliver anymore these days.
