CD review ANNIHILATOR ‘Ballistic, Sadistic’

Canadian guitar wizard Jeff Waters started Annihilator more than 30 years ago. He and the band went through all the ups and downs in Metal, surviving even the challenging ’90s and to me there are two main factors for this decades-bridging success. There is Waters’ 100% dedication to Metal, an energy that he never lost along the way. Secondly, Annihilator stands for excellent Heavy Metal that includes traditional Metal elements as well as hyper-speed sections and Thrash Metal blasts.

‘Ballistic, Sadistic’ is Annihilator’s new album, number seventeen in the bands’ discography, and it contains it all. A reason for it is that the record features the typical Jeff Waters musical signature. It includes a lot of Jeff Waters. The band is his brainchild and therefor he knows best how he wants an album to sound like. With song writing, engineering, performing and production, Waters had all strings in his hand, including the six-string, that lead to a very cool Metal record.

Annihilator’s new longplayer takes fans back to the earlier days. It’s the spirit of the first three albums, manifested by smashing songs like ‘Dressed For Evil’ and ‘Armed to the Teeth’, being the driver for the 11 songs. ‘One Wrong Move’ fits into the same context, a song powered by a strong beat and the typical Annihilator phrasing. With the acoustic middle section the song has a well-placed break too, showing not only the width of sounds on this album, but also the musical flexibility. And there is ‘The Attitude’, another relentless smasher with great speed and smartly placed breaks.

A song you shouldn’t miss either is the closer ‘That’s Life’. It’s a typical Annihilator headbanger with Waters’ furious guitar in the lead. What’s special though is a punk-ish undertone that’s weaved into this headbanger.

‘Ballistic, Sadistic’ is Annihilator’s excellent contribution to the start of a new century in Metal. Annihilator fans will love the album since it contains all the band stands for: heaviness, tempo, fury and enormous riffpower.
