CD review BÖLZER ‘Lese Majesty

Swiss-based Extreme Metal outfit Bölzer could celebrate last year their tenth anniversary, a decade filled with dark and blackened Metal. It took a while for the band to unveil a first record. Three EP’s escaped the darkness between 2010 and 2014. These releases made the band from Zurich to an important player in the metallic underground, leading to a full-length debut in 2016.

Nearly to date three years later the duo released their sophomore longplayer entitled ‘Lese Majesty’. With four songs the album has an overseeable tracklist, while realizing the length of songs shows that there’s a lot of Metal in the offer.

‘A Shepherd in Wolven Skin’ leads off the album. The blackened epos, with its eleven minutes running time, is an excellent start into the album. The two-men line-up fires on all cylinders after a short narrated intro leads to a bloodcurdling scream. Bölzer doesn’t care about convention and conformity. The duo follows their passion and musical vision that entails more than solely Black Metal. ‘Æstivation’, the second song, shows this very well. Dark and oppressive samples are accompanied by desperate spoken words. Emotionally intensity doesn’t only mean evil riffs and deep growls. There are more musical tools to create a morbid atmosphere and Bölzer knows how to use them.

The blast though finds a continuation with ‘Into the Temple of Spears’, which is another raging Black Metal song before the first notes of ‘Ave Fluvuis! Danu Be Praised’ take over. The closer is with 14 minutes the longest track on this release and it starts gloomy and calm. It’s an eerie vibe that comes with this song, especially in the beginning. After a bit less than two minutes the intro turns into a massive riff. The song gains speed along the way with tempo changes that are well-placed. It’s almost an avantgarde-ish expression that comes with this epos, being more than just another Black Metal songs. It’s s black soul that covers this song in shades of grey being almost a musical pendant to a film noir.

‘Lese Majesty’ is a dark album that gives you the shivers by the way the tones are touching from start to end. This album needed to be released in the grey month of November since sunrays is what it certainly can’t handle.
