(8/10) Alter Bridge is around since more than 15 years and grew to one of the big players in the fields of Alternative Rock and –Metal. Four years ago the band released with ‘The Last Hero’ a highly successful longplayer entering the Top 10 in several longplayer chart.
New Alter Bridge albums usually need time to get accomplished. This has mainly to do with busy schedules of Mark Tremonti and Myles Kennedy, being part of other bands and project too. Tremonti has is own solo project ongoing while Kennedy is known as the singer and frontman of Slash.
This time it took the guys four years to finish the next record, which is the sixth one in the band’s success story. Fourteen tracks is what the new longplayer carries., an album that has a lot of great music at hand.
‘One Life’ is an unusual start, being a mix of songs and intro. It’s a calmer way to get into the sound of ‘Walk the Sky before ‘Wouldn’t You Rather’ comes next on the batting order, a typical Alter Bridge songs. A heavy verse leads to a melodic chorus adorned with Tremonti’s excellent guitar play. In general it’s the mighty pounding tracks on ‘Walk the Sky’ being the highlights. ‘Native Son’ is such a song and ‘Take the Crown’ takes it even further. With reduced speed the tune features a terrific chorus. It’s a great song on an album that comes with no real disappointment.
Next to the heavy pounding songs it’s tunes like ‘Godspeed’ reflecting the melodic and more mainstream oriented Alter Bridge. The hooks are irresistible, a take that also builds the base for ‘Tear Us Apart’. These two examples stand for are aiming for a wider fanbase. It’s good songs, just a bit too much standardized.
All in all we can conclude that ‘Walk the Sky’ is a well-done next Alter Bridge release. It balances roughness and commercial impact in a good fashion. Tremonti’s guitar that secures a basic heaviness while it’s Kennedy’s vocals and the melodic vocal lines that allows a sing-a-long for many of these tracks. Good music the typical Alter Bridge way.
