Devin Townsend has been hard to miss lately. Not long ago, he released The Moth, his latest studio album, and he was on the road for a solo tour that brought him to Hamburg’s Markthalle, among other stops. Now The Moth (The War) adds another chapter, documenting an ambitious live performance from one of Canada’s most distinctive musical minds.
Townsend brought The Moth to the stage as a full-scale production. On March 28, he performed at the Grote Zaal at De Oosterpoort in Groningen, presenting the new album with a carefully constructed visual and musical concept. It was the second consecutive night of the production and stood in sharp contrast to his recent solo shows, which were built around a smaller and more intimate setting.
This was the world premiere of The Moth, with Townsend performing alongside his band, the North Netherlands Orchestra, and a 60-member choir. Around 70 musicians were involved in the performance, giving the songs another layer of depth. That impact comes across on the audio release, but it becomes even more apparent in the video. The orchestra and choir alone create a striking backdrop for the performance.
Townsend performed the entire album from beginning to end, divided into two parts. What unfolds is a deeply immersive concert experience that should appeal to fans of the Canadian artist’s constantly evolving approach to music. The performance moves from heavy, powerful sections to quiet and fragile passages where the room seems to hold its breath.
The audience clearly understands the range of what is happening on stage. Applause fills the space between songs, while the music itself is met with focused silence. There is a sense that the crowd is not simply watching a concert, but taking in a complete piece of work.
Townsend remains committed to his musical—and, perhaps more importantly, artistic—vision. For him, music has never been just a sequence of notes and chords. The Moth (The War – Live in Groningen) reflects a broader understanding of performance as a complete artistic experience, combining sound, visuals, musicians and atmosphere into one production.
Being there in Groningen must have been quite a night. For everyone who wasn’t, this release offers a chance to experience that performance from home, ideally with earphones on.
