Ghøstkid are still a relatively young band. Sebastian Biesler started the project in 2020 after leaving Eskimo Callboy. The self-titled debut arrived that same year, and having Heaven Shall Burn frontman Marcus Bischoff contribute vocals to “Supernova” certainly helped put the band on the radar a little faster.
After Hollywood Suicide landed in 2024, the third Ghøstkid album is now ready to hit the record stores. Follow the White Rabbit is the title, and “Ivory” offered the first taste of what was coming. The lead single is dark and ominous, while a few well-placed melodic lines give the track some accessibility. It also serves as an early musical statement following Biesler’s decision to rebuild the entire lineup in May this year, including the return of longtime associate David Friedrich on drums.
There was never much chance of Follow the White Rabbit turning into a colorful affair. Instead, pounding beats and the darker side of the human psyche provide much of the album’s musical direction. Fear takes center stage on tracks like the hard-hitting “Mother Death,” with Sushi screaming as if there is nothing left to hold back.
At the same time, Ghøstkid leave plenty of room for atmosphere. “I Destroy You” shifts the focus toward electronics and clean vocals, creating a very different mood. Put these two songs next to each other and you already get a pretty good picture of the range Ghøstkid bring to the table.
Pop-leaning melodies collide with massive riffs, emotional vocals meet outright screams, and a powerful production keeps all those contrasts tied together. The title track has enough bounce to get a crowd moving, while “Purple Snakes” leans more toward the dance floor. Heavy music does not always have to stand still and look angry.
“Lovely” adds another melodic highlight to the record. It is one of those songs that could potentially reach well beyond the usual metalcore audience. Its accessible character stands in sharp contrast to the massive breakdowns elsewhere, underlining the sense of inner conflict that runs through the album. Even here, though, a melancholic undertone remains firmly in place.
“White Rainbow” brings this deeply personal album to a close. Follow the White Rabbit gives Ghøstkid another opportunity to establish themselves within the metalcore scene, while the band’s experience is clearly audible throughout. With songs that manage to bridge heaviness and emotion without completely sacrificing either side, Ghøstkid have built a record that knows exactly where it wants to go
