Forbidden look back on a legacy as the youngest, hungriest, and most ambitious representatives of the “Bay Area” scene that gave rise to groundbreaking metal giants like Metallica and Machine Head. With a newly formed lineup, guitarist Craig Locicero and bassist Matt Camacho have created a masterpiece spanning over an hour, characterized by thrash passion, emotional musical passages, and a touch of progressive metal. From the intensity of the opener “Single Point Failure” to the philosophical nuances of the nine-minute closing track “Flower of Life,” Forbidden have not only outgrown the steel-hard foundation of the 1988 classic “Forbidden Evil” or the quantum leap of “Twisted Into Form” (1990); it is the sound of a band with a new understanding of scope and purpose. Produced by Locicero, Kontos, and Zach Ohren (Machine Head), “Forbidden” is not merely a revival for the quintet, but a comprehensive renewal and a cathartic milestone for this Bay Area metal institution.
