Review PSYCROPTIC “The Pulse of Annihilation”

For more than two decades, Tasmania’s Psycroptic have been a respected force in technical death metal. Formed in West Hobart in 1999, the band released its debut, The Isle of Disenchantment, in 2001. Now, with The Pulse of Annihilation, Psycroptic deliver their ninth studio album and their first release through Metal Blade Records.

Across nine tracks, the Australian outfit once again demonstrates why it has remained relevant in an increasingly competitive genre. While crushing riffs and relentless intensity are central to the band’s sound, The Pulse of Annihilation is far from a one-dimensional death metal record. Psycroptic consistently balances sheer aggression with atmosphere, dynamics, and technical precision.

The opening track, “Ashes of a New Dawn,” immediately showcases this approach. Rather than relying solely on brute force, the song layers intricate guitar work with shifting tempos and carefully crafted arrangements, setting the tone for what follows.

That balance continues throughout the album. “No Time for the Weak” delivers the kind of ferocious riff assault fans expect, while “A Sword of Me” reveals a more atmospheric side. Beginning with a restrained, almost ominous introduction, the track slowly builds tension before erupting into a powerful yet remarkably controlled barrage of riffs.

“Our Pillars Fall” opens with an acoustic intro before gradually gathering momentum. As the song unfolds, it transforms into a pulsating riff monster filled with subtle details that reward repeated listens. The melodic passages, in particular, provide an effective contrast to the album’s heavier moments.

The ‘title track’, “Annihilation Pulse,” fits seamlessly into the album’s overall flow. It is one of the more direct songs on the record, but it still leaves plenty of room for the band’s trademark technical flourishes without sacrificing its immediate impact.

Following the vicious attack of “To Embrace This Curse,” the closing track, “Forging the Crown,” begins on a surprisingly restrained and slightly dystopian note before building into one final musical sledgehammer that brings the album to an appropriately powerful conclusion.

With The Pulse of Annihilation, Psycroptic deliver an album that is both technically accomplished and undeniably heavy. Intricate guitar leads, the precise musicianship of the entire band, and Jason Peppiatt’s menacing growls combine to create a record that rewards attentive listening while never losing its raw intensity. The album successfully balances complexity and aggression, making it another well-forged addition to Psycroptic’s impressive catalog.
