The Cloverhearts are a Celtic punk rock band with Australian roots and an international flair. Sam Cooper founded the band, and they have a new album in the pipeline called “Germaniac!,” a surprising title.
The band has been on the road a lot, with many shows taking place in Germany. After spending a lot of time on the Autobahn and backstage at German clubs, the band dedicated these new songs to their adventures and to a country that got closer to their hearts.
Lyrically rhe band travels from Munich to Hamburg, and they like German beer. The opener “Oktoberfest (Beer is Good)” is an ode to the German beer fest and the perfect start to the album. Instead of Blasmusik, we can enjoy a thunderous start that brings Celtic rock to Oktoberfest.
With “Hangover in Hamburg” and “Gertrude’s Ghost: The Haunting of Hafenklang,” the band expresses their fascination with the metropolis in the north. The first is a blistering punk rock song with references to Bad Religion, while the latter incorporates a ska element into The Cloverhearts’ sound. Gertrude is a fictional character from Eimsbüttel, and Hafenklang is the legendary club in Hamburg. It’s another homage to Hamburg’s vibrant rock and punk scene.
“Gesundheit” blends the Celtic, whistle-driven sound of rebellion with a sense of humor, and the strong bassline provides an irresistible groove. However, there are also serious moments amidst all the fun. “Never Again Is Now” is a clear anti-fascist anthem, and the song couldn’t be more relevant these days, despite its catchy melody.
“Germaniac!” is an album delivering punk rock straight from the heart. The band delivers eleven anthems that entertain with a rebellious heartbeat and some respectful irony. This album keeps you hooked from start to finish.
