Review MORK “Monolitt“

Mork is the brainchild of Thomas Eriksen, who founded the band in 2004. „Isebakken“ was the debut album, and now the latest studio effort, „Monolitt“, hits the shelves.

The band’s eighth album features nine songs, and the opener, “Under vekten av verden,” shows that Mork maintains an aggressive black metal sound. Sinister riffs and Eriksen’s hoarse vocals form the basis of the song. The song offers more than just speed; it also contains an icy, atmospheric element.

“Ødelagt” and “Torden” are two songs that announced the album as lead singles. “Ødelagt” is an evil riff monolith with a slow, sulfurous section. “Torden,” on the other hand, is a more straightforward song. This furious track has fewer frills, and after listening to the longer songs that start the album, a basic black metal song is a well-placed twist.

The songs on Monolitt are generally rather long and sometimes almost too long. Each song has a hypnotic quality that draws you in, but there are moments when you think that one less minute would have had the same impact.

A song that demands more playing time is “Inn i en annen saere.” An acoustic intro is joined by a growing riff, leading to a metal maelstrom that unveils its energy step by step. “Inn i en annen saere” is the album’s epic moment, blending a blackened heart with racing speed and an eerie atmosphere. This song is the highlight of the album, followed by another metallic blast called “Martyr.”

An eerie intro kicks off “Utryddelse,” the album closer. Starting at a moderate pace, the song includes some raging parts, with Eriksen’s vocals and traditional riffing acting as the main ingredients.

“Monolitt“ is another black-hearted release from the Norwegian metal force. It is Mork’s eighth studio album, showing the band continuing their journey through hellish darkness. It’s a solid album from the North, though a few songs could have been more concise. However, the hellish grin that stares at you while listening to “Monolitt“ can’t be ignored.
