Hailing from Germany, Madsen is one of the most well-established indie rock bands. Their name, based on the family name of three of the band members, has come to mean quality music, anthemic songs, and meaningful lyrics.
Now, with more than twenty years in the industry, the band is launching a new album, “Smile, ” featuring twelve new songs. Their previous album, “Hollywood” jumped to number one on the German charts, and “Smile” has the potential to do the same. The quality of the songs is too good, showcasing a wide variety of sounds. Yet the songs on Smile include the band’s signature sound, beginning with the title track.
The English title of the album might be misleading, as the lyrics are in German. The lyrics on the album are thoughtful, and “Smile” highlights the positive aspects of life, no matter how difficult things may be. Give a smile to your loved ones, and to yourself too, to make life lighter than it seems.
“Smile” is also one of the lead singles of the album, and a few more tracks have been revealed in the meantime. The selection is interesting because the songs represent the range of Madsen’s music. For example, there’s the hard-hitting “I Don’t Give a Fuck,” which alternates between riffs reminiscent of Rage Against the Machine and melodic parts. It’s a rebellious song that shows the band isn’t afraid of earth-shattering riffs.
“Achterbahn” is a song with a throbbing chorus that addresses the rollercoaster of life. “Neue Erinnerung” has a very positive vibe and emphasizes the importance of new experiences in life while “Hasta La Vista” echoes the idea of looking forward instead of remaining in the past. The greatness of the chorus is what makes the song so captivating.
“Smile” is a strong and important album. It is an ode to freedom, equality, and individuality. It’s more than just music. It’s a statement expressed through music that grabs your attention. Well-crafted hooks, superb melodies, and a broad musical approach are characteristic elements of Madsen, and they are all present on “Smile”. This album entertains with music that delights the ears and mind.
