Hardline started out as a sort of supergroup featuring Neal Schon, Deen Castronovo, and Todd Jensen, as well as brothers Johnny and Joey Gioeli. The band was founded in 1991 by the Gioeli brothers. Now, 35 years later, Hardline’s lineup has evolved, with Johnny Gioeli as the sole remaining founding member. This shift has not negatively impacted the quality of their latest release, however.
“Shout” is the title of the band’s powerful new album, featuring ten tracks, and it follows their 2021 release, “Heart, Mind and Soul.” The album opens in stunning fashion with its title track, setting the tone for what follows. Driven by punchy guitar work and Gioeli’s recognizable voice, “Shout” blends classic hard rock with an unforgettable, anthemic chorus.
“Rise Up” seamlessly builds on the opener, delivering another strong example of Hardline’s ability to fuse hard rock energy with infectious hooks. The melodies throughout the album are engaging, and by the time the pounding “It Owns You” kicks in, the band has showcased much of its musical spectrum. A more soulful dimension is introduced with “When You Came Into My Life.” This touching track, originally recorded by the Scorpions, begins with a piano arrangement and gradually builds into a heavier sound. Hardline’s interpretation remains faithful to the original while adding a distinct touch of their own.
The band is at its strongest when channeling the roots of rock into their music. The driving “Rise Above No Fear” exemplifies this approach, while “Candy Love” brings an unmistakable ’80s-inspired flair and an infectious vibe.
As the album comes to a close, Hardline once again demonstrates its full musical range. “Welcome to the Thunder” stands out with its seamless blend of powerful riffs and catchy hooks. The closing track, “Glow,” provides an emotional finale. As the album’s ballad, “Glow” explores themes of loss, whether of loved ones or cherished pets, while ultimately serving as an ode to life itself. Its melancholic yet uplifting tone leaves a lasting impression, lingering long after the final note fades.
With “Shout, Hardline delivers an album that fully meets expectations. It is a vibrant, dynamic, and uplifting record that brings light to darker times. It is perfectly suited as a soundtrack for spring and summer, inviting listeners to embrace the moment and enjoy the music.
