Review GREEN CARNATION “A Dark Poem Part II: Sanguis”

Norwegian progressive rock outfit Green Carnation launched their ambitious trilogy “A Dark Poem” in 2025 with the release of its first chapter. Following “A Dark Poem Part I: The Shores of Melancholia,” the band now unveils the second installment of this journey, set to arrive this March.

Comprised of six tracks, “A Dark Poem Part II: Sanguis” showcases both musical finesse and a refined sense for melody and atmospheric depth. Lyrically, the album ranks among the band’s most personal works to date. Themes of loss and sorrow dominate, yet the record avoids sinking entirely into darkness. Instead, it gradually introduces a sense of inner peace, even as a persistent thread of melancholia runs through each composition.

Musically, Green Carnation continues to refine their signature blend of classic rock warmth, progressive sophistication, and occasional bursts of somber metal intensity. These elements converge powerfully in the title track that opens the album. “Sanguis” is a stunning piece, combining meticulously crafted soundscapes with memorable hooks. The warm tones of the organ enrich the track’s emotional resonance, while the nine-minute epic also nods subtly to the band’s early death metal roots through brief touches of growled vocals. As an opener, it sets a striking tone, painting a bleak portrait of Stein Roger’s childhood and his relationship with his father.

“Loneliness Untold, Loneliness Unfold” follows as one of the album’s emotional high points. While fitting seamlessly into the overall narrative, it introduces a new dimension with its introspective and restrained character. This grief-laden piece is deeply moving from beginning to end, offering a quiet contrast before the heavier “Sweet to the Point of Bitter” reintroduces a more forceful dynamic. The latter merges weighty guitar work with melodic sensibility, highlighting the band’s full musical spectrum.

“Fire in Ice” begins with a calm, almost meditative introduction that gradually expands into a more powerful and thunderous arrangement. This interplay between intensity and intimacy becomes a defining feature of the album. Dense, driving sections transition into softer, more reflective passages, underscoring the band’s versatility and creative vision. Beyond this structural motif, however, “A Dark Poem Part II: Sanguis” remains largely unpredictable, filled with subtle twists and intricate details that reward attentive listening and contribute to a cohesive, immersive experience.

The album closes with “Lunar Tale,” a fragile and nearly serene composition that serves as a fitting conclusion. Its subdued beauty provides a sense of closure while simultaneously building anticipation for the trilogy’s final chapter. The song’s oppressive undertone hints at a conclusion that may prove just as dark and haunting as the journey’s earlier stages, reinforcing the cinematic scope of this compelling musical narrative.
