EvilDead are true veterans of thrash metal, proving that it wasn’t only the Bay Area that produced outstanding bands in the 1980s. Hailing from Los Angeles, EvilDead may never have reached the same level of fame as the genre’s biggest names, but they delivered exceptional thrash metal albums.
Their journey began in 1989 with the release of “Annihilation of Civilization,” a raw and heavy debut. At a time when thrash metal – and heavy metal in general – was already past its peak, EvilDead injected new energy into the scene with a fierce and refreshing record, complete with iconic cover art by Ed Repka.
Following the positive reception from the metal community, the band returned to the studio and released their sophomore album, “The Underworld,” in 1991. This record marked a clear step forward in their evolution. What started as a side project by Juan Garcia had grown into a more established and successful band, and “The Underworld” reflects that progress. While maintaining the relentless intensity of their debut, the album also showcases more refined songwriting. The tracks are more complex, yet they retain the raw edge that defines thrash metal.
Steamhammer has now reissued both albums in remastered form. In addition to the original tracklists, each release includes bonus tracks that round out these reissues. Fans of old-school thrash metal – especially those who appreciate underrated gems of the genre – will find these two albums well worth revisiting.
