Review LAMB OF GOD “Into Oblivion”

Hailing from Richmond, Virginia, Lamb Of God grew to become one of the most influential bands in modern metal. Their fusion of thrash metal, metalcore and groove metal is unique and easily identifiable. Another important aspect of Lamb Of God’s musical identity is the vocals of Randy Blythe, and the band’s stable line-up has also been a key factor in their success.

Except for Art Cruz on drums, who joined in 2019, the other four band members have been with the band since its formation in 1999. This consistency, combined with a passionate commitment to metal, establishes the band as veterans who don’t need to prove anything. This enables the quintet to follow their creative instincts, resulting in an album called “Into Oblivion”.

The latest studio album includes ten songs and showcases the band’s full musical range and freedom. There’s no doubt that this is 100% Lamb Of God, yet the album has some moments that push the boundaries in a positive way.
“Sepsis” is the lead single from the album and gives a good indication of what to expect from their 10th studio album. It is a pounding metal track with references to the sound of the ’90s. Driven by a strong bassline and Blythe’s expressive vocals, this dystopian masterpiece is one of the album’s highlights. The song is like a musical fever dream resulting from sepsis.

The start of the album also makes a clear statement in terms of heaviness. Lamb Of God don’t waste any time kicking off the album without a long intro. The title track starts more atmospherically, though, and turns into a grinding riff monster after a few seconds. It is a classic Lamb Of God song, without compromise.

“El Vacio” is a song that appears halfway through the album and breaks the pattern. A sober and atmospheric song, featuring melodic vocal lines, it showcases a different aspect of the band’s musical approach. It is a haunting song with its own unique dynamics. The throbbing middle section contrasts with the main pattern of “El Vacio” . Undoubtedly a Lamb Of God trademark, the song serves as an example of a band that never stands still.

With “Blunt Force Blues”, the band added another pulsating metal track to the album, reflecting on their early years and the influence of the local Richmond metal community. While “Blunt Force Blues” is kept at a moderate pace, “St. Catherine’s Wheel” shows a shift in gears.

The sound of “Into Oblivion” is also impressive. The album has a very powerful and dense sound. It is a raging album, underlined by songs such as “Bully” and the grooving closer, “Devise/Destroy”.

“Into Oblivion” showcases an experienced and hungry band. After 26 years in the music industry, not counting the Burn the Priest years, the five-piece band from Richmond has maintained its passion for aggressive metal, which resonates throughout the ten songs on this album. Combined with great craftsmanship, the band has released an album that is 100% Lamb Of God, while also raising the bar with unexpected details and moments. Horns up!
