Review KANONENFIEBER “Soldatenschicksale”

Kanonenfieber is one of the bands that has enjoyed an impressive rise in popularity in recent years. Despite having released only two albums and a few singles/EPs, the band has reached the top of the European metal scene. This stellar ascent is also evident when considering the size of the venues in which the band has performed. The shift from smaller club shows to larger venues reflects Kanonenfieber’s growing fanbase, who will now enjoy “Soldatenschicksale”.

The new album is actually not that new. It is more of a compilation of previously released EPs, and to add something new, Kanonenfieber also recorded two new tracks.

Kanonenfieber addresses the topic of war. Without glorifying heroes or heroic stories, the band puts death, human tragedy, and emotional turmoil at the centre of their lyrics. The two new songs continue in this vein, this time addressing the naval battle at Skagerrak. “Z-Vor!”, and “Heizer Tenner” are both based on the sinking of the SMS Wiesbaden. Kanonenfieber tells the story from the individual perspectives of a signalman and a stoker during this naval battle. The narration is oppressive and constricting, and the music perfectly emphasises the tragedy of the situation. It is a tale of death and despair, with stoker Heinz Zenne being the sole survivor.

Musically, both songs follow the Kanonenfieber trademarks. Blistering black metal elements fuse with morbid death metal riffs to define the band’s dense and fierce sound.

Alongside the new songs, the album also features revived versions of three EPs: “U-Bootsmann”, “Der Füsilier” and “Yankee Division”. These revised songs are significantly more powerful, offering a new dynamic. Combined with a dense sound, these band classics gain intensity, while simultaneously documenting the early phase of this relatively young band.

Those who recently connected with the music of Kanonenfieber will find a good summary of songs that define the band’s musical foundation in “Soldatenschicksale”. These songs represent thrilling music and a very relevant lyrical approach.
