Their music has grown heavier over time, but the progressive element remains. We’re talking about Iotunn from Denmark. Founded in 2015, they didn’t release an album until 2021, when they premiered with “Access All Worlds.” It wasn’t the easiest time for the band to put out a debut album, given all the restrictions on live music and concerts.
Despite all the obstacles and unfortunate conditions, Iotunn became one of the rising stars in progressive metal. What started with the debut album continued with “Kinship, ” showcasing the band’s commitment and willpower.
These days, the Danes are launching their first live album, “Waves over Copenhell,” which takes us back to 2023. Iotunn performed at the Copenhell festival, a home game show, which included five songs and a laser show that lit Copenhagen’s sky. With their second album in process, Iotunn focused on songs from their first record, opening with “Waves Below.” It is an 11-minute demonstration of heaviness and riff power with a multifaceted approach. The band never compromises on heaviness and simultaneously shows a great level of versatility. The band delivers the same energy live as they do on the album, and “Waves Over Copenhell” showcases the five Danes’ talent.
With “Mistland,” a first song from the then-upcoming album was also presented by the band, which means that a first taste of what’s on the horizon was provided. It is a majestic live version of one of the great songs from “Kinship”.
Iotunn is a band that has launched two superb studio albums, and “Waves Over Copenhell” fills the void of a missing live release. The Danes are an excellent live band that delivers vibrant performances, and “Waves over Copenhell” reflects the raw energy and strength of the five-piece band that captured a milestone moment in their career.
