Review MAUSOLEUM GATE “Space, Rituals and Magick”

Mausoleum Gate was founded in 2008. After launching their debut album in 2014, they returned three years later with their second release, “Into a Dark Divinity.” Fans had to wait even longer for the third album, as it took eight years before being able to welcome “Space, Ritual and Magick.”

Mausoleum Gate’s artwork has always looked slightly different from that of most other metal bands. It is colorful, and the latest release follows the same pattern. While this may not fully connect with the music, it simultaneously draws attention. Without elaborating much more on the visuals, it is the music that counts.

The songs on “Space, Rituals and Magick” are a kaleidoscope of sounds blending traditional heavy metal, epic metal, and rock with even some AOR influences. This fusion of genres defines the music of the six-piece Finnish band.

The new album includes six songs, and since Mausoleum Gate’s songs are impactful and lengthy, we have 38 minutes of well-crafted music starting with “Vision Divine.” It’s a powerful opening that combines 70s rock influences with traditional metal. The vocals by Jarno Saarinen stand out, partly reminding me of Ozzy Osbourne. I also thought of Daniel Brennare while listening to the first song.

“Shine the Night” is a song that showcases more of the above-mentioned AOR influences. A driving keyboard and a computerized voice sample open the song, which quickly captivates listeners with its catchy melody. “Shine the Night” has a certain level of heaviness, which prevents it from being shallow pop. At the same time, the song has a captivating flow that blossoms immediately.

“Lucifer Shrine” offers a glimpse back to the late ’70s and early ’80s, while the metal foundation sets the tone for songs like the riff-driven “Sacred Be Thy Throne.” The calmer, epic finale is entitled “Witches Circle.” It’s a colorful spectacle at the end of the album and a treat for the ears and mind.

“Space, Rituals, and Magick” is a grower. It’s an album that becomes more enjoyable with each listen. A certain basic foundation connects the songs, while the twists and musical versatility allow for lasting delight while listening to this release.
