Review DEEZ NUTS “Saudade”

The new Deez Nuts album, “Sausage”, is a melting pot of hardcore, metal and rap. The Australian band’s latest studio album features ten songs and follows the 2019 release “You Got Me Fucked Up”.

In a way, “Sausage” continues the band’s musical endeavour, even though the world has changed since 2019. This is not only due to the pandemic that took place. There has also been a change in the band’s line-up, making Deez Nuts an even more international outfit. Apolinário ‘Poli’ Correia from Portugal and Canadian drummer Jesse Labovitz have joined the band, bringing a fresh element of inspiration to the mix. At the same time, Deez Nuts maintain their musical roots, delivering groovy hardcore with a modern twist. There is a crossover factor woven in that reminds me of the sound of the ’90s, as expressed in songs like the massive “ICU”, which also showcases the band’s metal influences. “ICU” is a great start to the album, and it’s almost impossible to escape the fascinating groove. Equipped with steamhammer power, the song reflects a great way to start before “Kill This Shit” reveals Deez Nuts’ crossover factor.

“5 Gold Chains” is characterised by a shift in pace and a chorus that doesn’t blossom right away.
“Uncut Gems” demonstrates the band’s ambition to vary their sound, which is evident in the song’s rocking start before the blasting momentum returns after a few seconds. Overall, “Uncut Gems” is a raging hardcore song on an album that also features a guest appearance on one of the tracks.

Andrew Neufeld from Comeback Kid contributes to “Hang the Hangman”, and once again, it takes a while for the chorus to reveal its sing-along qualities. However, Neufeld’s barking vocals are a nice twist and differentiate the song from most of the others.

The final third of the tracklist adheres to the typical Deez Nuts sound, with “Cold Sweat” being somewhat of an exception, particularly with regard to the soundtrack-like intro and the unexpected middle section of the song. However, the closer also develops into a massive riff attack, finishing off an album brimming with energy. Deez Nuts aim to give the album a certain level of versatility, which works well at times but feels a bit forced at others. Besides that, “Saudade” is the perfect soundtrack for slam pits in beer-soaked clubs.
