Review IGORRR “Amen”

The progressive and experimental sound of Igorrr is what the band is known for. It is the brainchild of French multi-instrumentalist Gautier Serre, who founded the group twenty years ago. Four albums have already been released, and the newest, “Amen, ” is now available. This new album marks a shift in focus from a one-man project to a band, though the musical approach remains consistent with Sere in the lead. However, it is darker than its predecessor, and recording a real choir in a church emphasizes the vibe of “Amen.” Take “Limbo” as an example. Operatic female vocals, a choral introduction, and massive blast beats are all part of “Limbo” and demonstrate the album’s versatility.

Nothing on “Amen” is predictable, as the album has so many unexpected twists and turns. Some Arabic influences are embedded in “Blastbeat Falafel,” competing with harsh death metal blasts. “Amen” is an album of contrasts and experiments. This common theme leads to unconventional sound collages, such as on “ADHD.”

“2020” is the shortest track on the album, lasting only 12 seconds, and it is “Infestis” that creates dark soundscapes. The thumping track, kept mainly at a slower pace, belongs to the more spot-on moments on “Amen,” followed by “Ancient Sun” with its very atmospheric approach. Though they are totally different, the magic of the album is that both songs fit into the exploratory context of the fifth Igorrr album.

As the title suggests, “Pure Disproportionate Black and White Nihilism” is complex. This massive yet filigree musical masterpiece represents various facets of Igorrr. The nearly romantic “Étude No. 120” is a calmer moment that leads to “Silence.” The closer picks up the vibe of “Étude No. 120.” Piano and soothing vocals characterize the beginning of the song, which then incorporates an orchestral element. As with the previous songs, the moment you start to enjoy the peaceful energy, things take a turn. Some very short, cleverly integrated blastbeat sequences add to the mounting tension of “Silence.”

“Amen” is a masterfully composed album that showcases Sere’s limitless creativity. He has a musical vision that acts as the compass for “Amen.” If you love unpredictable songs and music that deliver more than one curveball, “Amen” is the go-to album.
