Live report JAN DELAY and DISKO NO.1 & DAS BO, Wunderino Arena, Kiel – September 11th, 2025

Today, Markus’ Heavy Music Blog features and embraces music outside the usual rock and metal framework. However, Jan Delay’s roots might be a bit more similar to those of some heavier bands.

Delay is one of the pioneers of the Hamburg hip-hop scene. At the time, that scene was highly creative, with a rebellious mindset that appreciated nonconformity. The mindset of some metal bands wasn’t that different, even though their musical outlet was different. And don’t forget the crossover between the two genres in the late ’90s.

Another artist from that time is Das Bo, who will perform tonight at the Wunderino Arena in Kiel. Das Bo starts the night with his sidekick, Schmiddlfinga. Despite playing a rather big stage, the two guys still fill the space with their music. A booming bass, grooving beats, and Das Bo’s cool performance set the mood for a fun-filled evening.

Jan Delay moved away from hip-hop years ago to explore a more funky genre of music, though he hasn’t forgotten his roots. The more colorful, funky disco groove is tonight’s main asset and is bringing a lot of joy and fun to Kiel. From the opening songs “Hallo” and “Klar” to the laid-back version of “Irgendwie, Irgendwo, Irgendwann,” the energy in the venue steadily increases. Since it is “The Best of 25 Years — Die Tour,” some medleys represent highlights from the back catalog. With “Saxophone,” we enter the ballad-driven, soulful part of the show, which ends with a glorious finale of hits. “Eule” and the declaration of love to “St. Pauli” are songs that can’t be missed at such a show, and they conclude a stunning night perfectly.

Jan Delay was the trailblazer of Hamburg’s hip-hop scene, and with his shift toward funk, he has reinvented his musical style while remaining one of the most prominent and influential artists in Germany’s music scene.
