German metal group Nailed To Obscurity premiered with “Abyss” in 2007 and have released a total of four long players, with “Black Frost” being the latest to date. The album was released in 2019, and six years later, the band is returning with their next release.
The title of the next studio album from the five-piece is “Generation of the Void”, and it is the first to feature bassist Lutz Neemann. Nailed to Obscurity have included ten songs on the tracklist, beginning with “Glass Bleeding” This seven-minute epic showcases the band’s signature style. The quintet is renowned for their powerful riffs and deep growls, which increasingly interact with clean vocals and melodic soundscapes. “Liquid Mourning” exemplifies this fusion well. Combined with melancholy, which is the common theme throughout, the sound of the Lower Saxony band is reminiscent of some Scandinavian bands. Swallow the Sun and Katatonia from Sweden are operating in the same genre, and there is even a link to Opeth in the fusion of death metal and harmonic progressive soundscapes.
While Nailed to Obscurity’s sound may not be entirely unique, fans will enjoy the well-crafted melancholic death metal on “Generation of the Void”. The heavily pounding “Overcast” reflects the heavier moments of the album, while the atmospheric middle section showcases the band’s versatility.
“Spirit Corrosion” features some unexpected ‘ohohohoh’ moments, while “Echo Attempt” starts theatrically and darkly before evolving into a layered song that alternates between calm and roaring loudness.
“Allure” is a hypnotic stomper with clean vocals, and “the Ides of Life” concludes an album that showcases quality and passion
Nailed To Obscurity’s newest album was released after a long wait, and it’s clear that the band used that time to create excellent songs with the ability to stir up strong emotions. Combined with a dense and nuanced sound, the album is a treat for everyone who doesn’t enjoy sunshine and bright colors.
