The Ossuary hail from Italy and “Requiem for the Sun” is already their fourth release to date. The newest effort features eight songs, and the trio continues their heavy rock journey. “Sacrifice” sets the scene, giving an idea of what to expect for those who have listened to the band before. The slower-paced opener is a hybrid of ’70s rock and well-integrated metal elements. “Sacrifice” is dark, with a psychedelic vibe, and the repetition of the main theme creates a hypnotic effect.
The next song, “Altar in Black,” is faster and contains references to early heavy metal bands, such as Witchfinder General. “Far From the Tree” starts with a Sabbath-inspired riff, and “Wishing Well” almost has a stoner vibe. The latter is a darker, gloomier moment that evokes a lot of melancholy. As if these influences weren’t enough, there’s also a grunge vibe running through tunes like “The Others.”
“The Others” is a straightforward rocker that, in a broader sense, calls to mind the early Warrior Soul, before the following title track unleashes a flood of grief and darkness. “Eloise” is the concluding piece of the album, and with a duration of nearly nine minutes, it stands as the most substantial composition on the album. It’s atmospheric music that captures a Paradise Lost mood. Slow-paced and heavy-hearted, “Eloise” crawls out of the speakers. It is a poignant celebration of melancholy that leaves a lasting impression on the listener.
“Requiem for the Sun” is the title of the new album by The Ossuary, which is full of atmospheric moments, psychedelic soul images, and gloomy riffs. The Ossuary’s music, drawing from the 70s for its roots and inspiration, envelops the listener in a somber atmosphere. Instead of the light of day, the only illumination that is permitted is the soft glow of candles, which serves to accentuate the spiritual essence of the music.
