Review STEVE HACKETT “Live Magic At Trading Boundaries”

Trading Boundaries is a special place in Sussex, England. It is a retail destination for furniture and handcrafted items, as well as a café/bar and boutique hotel. A place like this isn’t exactly what you think of when you think of rock music. However, Trading Boundaries regularly hosts live events, and one of the artists who returns on a regular basis is Steve Hackett.

Again this year, Hackett will play two sets at the venue, the first of which will take place the day after the guitarist releases his new live album, “Live Magic At Trading Boundaries”. What is special about these concerts, as well as the live recording, is the unique atmosphere of the show, which is expressed in the gentle and classically oriented interpretations of various songs. There are some Genesis highlights like “Supper’s Ready / After the Ordeal / Hairless Hear”, which is performed in a classical arrangement – the latter with an improvisation part as well. Joining Hackett on stage are his brother John Hackett (flute), Roger King (keyboards), Rob Townsend (flute and sax). And there is Amanda Lehmann on guitar but also singing a beautiful version of “Memory Lane”.

Hackett also adds some classical works to the repertoire, such as “Gnossienne No.1”, written by French composer Erik Satie. In addition to these songs, the setlist also includes some of his own compositions. “Hands of the Priestess” is one of these songs, as well as “Black Light” and “The Journey”, two songs on the album that represent the compositional talent of Steve Hackett beyond the fields of progressive rock. In fact, the entire live album has little to do with progressive rock, while it is Hackett’s musical genius that connects the dots.

“Live Magic At Trading Boundaries” is the name of a series of concerts that have become a tradition in January of each year. In an intimate atmosphere, Steve Hackett presents music that is touching and intense. Almost fragile and full of emotion, the guitarist reveals the essence of his musical life. This release is a moment to pause and let yourself be carried away into a world of music beyond riff power.
