Primal Code was formed in the midst of the pandemic. It was 2021 when the death metal powerhouse from Chicago, Illinois started their metal journey and so far a demo, an EP and a split single have been the releases. Those brought the band to the attention of Relapse Records, who signed Primal Code.
The trio, consisting of Gene Marino, Will Lindsay and James Farn, completed work on their debut album. “Opaque Fixation” is the title of this full-length premiere from the death metal group, and it is a great one.
Primal Code are into oldschool death metal with some references to bands like Bolt Thrower, Dismember and Obituary.
Speed isn’t the main factor that makes “Opaque Fixation” a powerful death metal album. Instead of constantly pushing the pedal to the metal, the Illinois trio focuses on intensity through groove. It’s a wrecking ball of power that you get when listening to songs like the massive “Hive”. Driven by a very strong rhythm section and equipped with a slower but very intense middle section, the song is a headbanger’s delight.
The start of the album is simply called “Intro” and leaves no room for interpretation of what it is. It’s a swarm-like sound that foreshadows some evil that kicks in with the oppressive bass line of “Anapsid”. The song isn’t exactly a slow one, but it’s the ground-shaking density that makes “Anapsid” an excellent death metal blast.
“Totem” is another highlight from the album. Like an unstoppable freight train, the track hits you with full force.
“Extinction” is a song that could have risen from the Florida swamps, while “Angler” is another example of passionate death metal that continues to unfold its sinister fascination. It’s a mesmerizing tune that fires on all cylinders with a blueprint that goes all the way back to Bolt Thrower.
“Opaque Fixation” is a debut done with great craftsmanship. Primal Code is a young and hungry band and it shows in every note on this album. These guys are following their musical vision and aren’t willing to deviate from it. The hellhounds are off the leash.
