Seether is one of the most popular bands from South Africa. Formed in 1999, the band debuted in 2002 with the album “Disclaimer”. The group started to grow with “Disclaimer II” while it was “Karma and Effect” that helped the formation to gain international recognition.
The band has released eight studio albums to date, and number nine is just about to be shipped to record stores. “The Surface Seems So Far” is the title of Seether’s ninth album, which contains eleven songs that reflect the typical Seether sound.
The four-piece have found their own formula by mixing alternative rock with a post-grunge vibe and the aggression of nu metal. It’s already reflected in “Judas Mind”, which is the first song you’ll encounter after hitting the ‘play’- button. The song was also released as a single prior to the album’s release and is a powerful one. While the verse is kept in a rather calm setup, it is the energized chorus that creates a counterpart and thus increases the thrill.
Surprisingly wide soundscapes are what “Illusion” generates and there is a constant level of melancholy that runs through the entire album, culminating with “Regret”, the last song on the album.
“Walls Come Down” shows the anthemic nature of Seether’s music, followed by the riff-driven start of “Try to Heal”. After a very powerful start, the song slows down in the verse before the chorus delivers the rock outburst. This setup is part of Seether’s basic sound and is reflected more than once on their latest record.
“The Surface Seems So Far” is actually a cool album that entertains you with good rock music from start to finish. These songs are reminiscent of a time when the new millennium started and Seether transports this vibe to 2024. On the one hand this is really good and there is a constant feeling too that the sound has already had its great times. Let’s just say that “The Surface Seems So Far” is a nostalgic trip back to the years when Nu Metal, Post-Grunge and Alternative Rock were in their heyday.
