Glare Of The Sun is a band that hasn’t been on my radar, but that’s about to change with their third full-length, “Tal”. The band started in 2013, when some musicians from Austria and Germany embarked on a musical journey through rich musical landscapes.
The first album the guys released is “Soil” from 2017, followed by the second album “Theia”, which was published two years later. After a few more years, the third album “TAL” will reach the record stores and what the five-piece delivers is an impressive album with music that will be remembered.
Glare Of The Sun have found their own musical style, combining several genres and influences. There are the slow and bitter sounds of doom as well as shoegaze influences that come to the fore more than once. Strengthened with some layers, the songs of “TAL” unveil exciting soundscapes that want to be explored by the listener.
The music lives from its contrasts. The five guys create an emotional momentum that shifts from melancholic to hopeful to soul-touching heaviness. To get a good impression of how this manifests itself, I can recommend listening to “Rain”. The calmer moments interact with massive riff assaults when pure heaviness blasts through your ear channels. Some growl-ish vocals add an extra level of intensity to the mix.
Another song not to be missed is the opener “Colossus”. It is a majestic beginning that does a great job of creating excitement and interest in the band and the album. It was the first Glare Of The Sun song I heard and it pulled me into this full length release. Wrapped in a gray musical blanket, the song spreads an atmosphere of unease without making the listener feel uncomfortable.
“TAL” is an album that makes it easy for the listener to connect. At the same time, Glare Of The Sun have created songs that offer much more than a few spins of the album on the record player. Each of these seven tracks (CD & digital also includes two bonus tracks) is an intense journey through the world of sound. These songs evoke emotions, and that is when music is at its best. And because the variations and layers allow the listener to constantly discover new details, the album provides a lasting but darkened treat.
