Review MAYHEMIC “Toba”

Blackened thrash metal is what Mayhemic offer. Founded in 2018, the band consists of Noctumbra, Doom, Mageklis and Leviathan. The guys have already released a demo, an EP and a couple of singles before launching “Toba” these days.

“Toba” is the title of the band’s full-length debut and it contains eight songs. The album takes its title from the so-called Toba eruption, which was the outbreak of a supervolcano 70,000 years ago. The theory of this eruption is controversial. However, it provides a perfect narrative for Mayhemic’s debut album.

What is less debatable is the musical outburst that comes with this raw and untamed release. Listening to the album for the first time, I was reminded of the early Kreator releases, as ‘Toba’ is blazingly fast and brutal. From time to time, the four-piece almost get ahead of themselves, unleashing an enormous riffing power on songs like ‘Eschatological Symphony’.

The starting point of this blistering metal record is a furious one. Mayhemic don’t waste any time and what roars out of the speakers is fierce metal. There is no foot on the brake. In fact, there doesn’t seem to be any brakes at all, which leads to the thunderous “Kollarbone Crushed Neanderthal”. With all the aggression, the song also includes some well-placed breaks and, clocking in at almost six minutes, is a creditable start to the album. The next song “Extinction & Mystery” doesn’t change the general concept, with the compass still being calibrated on full speed and a hellish grin.

Mayhemic make a lot of noise and their debut album is a musical wild horse. You can’t listen to this album without headbanging.
