Following the release of the latest Black Country Communion album, Joe Bonamassa fans are in for a treat. “Live at the Hollywood Bowl With Orchestra” is the new live album from the iconic rock and blues guitarist.
The show took place on August 9th at Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles, California. Bonamassa played a 16-song set that also featured a 40-piece orchestra. Playing at the venue was also the fulfilment of a dream for Bonamassa. It was in 2003 when the singer and guitarist moved to Los Angeles to find cheaper rent than he was used to in New York City. Playing his first shows at The Mint was a start to getting into the local scene, followed by a few shows at the Greek Theatre. The Bowl was the dream, and playing there last year became a reality.
Bonamassa delivers a set that represents the fusion of rock and blues to perfection. Bonamassa relies on his own songs, of which he has plenty in the back catalogue of his musical work, to start the show. The first songs of this memorable evening though aren’t on the live album, which means that we miss tunes like ‘Evil Mama’ and ‘Dust Bowl’.
The live release begins with the orchestra joining the legendary musician. “When One Door Opens” is a classic overture leading into “Curtain Call”. It’s a dramatic start and what’s immediately apparent is the great interplay between Bonamassa, band and orchestra.
Musical perfection with a lot of emotion is what ‘Self-Inflicted Wounds’ offers, a musical treat that is touching and reveals the full intensity of the blues. With “Ball Peen Hammer”, a Chris Whitely cover, rock and blues unit while a very emotive version of Barbara Streisand’s “Prisoner” offers the full set of feelings. And let’s not forget “Heartaches”, a melancholic moment that goes straight to the heart.
“Live at the Hollywood Bowl With Orchestra” is a remarkable live album from an artist who is one of the true greats of modern blues-rock. Joe Bonamassa’s focus has always been on the music, resulting in passionate shows like the one in L.A. last August. No ego, no star attitude. It’s all about great music, presented with commitment and fervor.
