Review LUCIFER ‘Lucifer V’

Since Lucifer started to shake the world of rock in 2015 with the ‘Lucifer I’ the five-piece walked on an impressive musical path. A growing fanbase, great releases and a growing fanbase reflect the musical thrill created by Lucifer.

The blend of sounds and inspiration is broad. Classic rock from the 70s, (doom)metal and occult rock fuse with the result of high-octane songs that go straight to the heart. It is almost impossible to not be impressed by Lucifer’s music and the newest effort causes the same effect.

Continuing the naming strategy of their releases, the newest longplayer is called ‘Lucifer V’ and entails nine new songs that seamlessly connect to the earlier releases. The sweeping mix of styles and the excellent vocal performance of Johanna Platow Andersson are again main pillars for this rock-solid musical monument.

‘Fallen Angel’ is the peppy starting point. The very rhythm-driven song is the ideal kickstart for the album with a great sin-along chorus. The passion for doom metal a la Black Sabbath and Pentagram is what the following ‘At the Mortuary’ indicates. The slow and heavy starting riff is a clear reference to the power of doom metal although the song itself has the swinging 70s vibe. This tune shows the entire width of Lucifer’s musical roots.

Next is ‘Riding the Hunter’ which is another highlight on the album. It is the dark vibe that rules and before the melancholic ‘Slow Dance in a Crypt’ shows the calmer approach of the band. It is a touching moment on the album and strengthen a great flow of songs. A bit of 80s metal is what ‘A Coffin Has No Silver Lining’ brings to surface. It is the catchy and melodic moment that brings listeners to the acoustic start of ‘Maculate Heart’. Although having an acoustic beginning the song evolves to a rocking anthem that represents the beauty of well-crafted rock music with heart and soul.

‘Lucifer V’ Is with a running time of 40 minutes not extremely long but features only songs of great quality which goes for ‘The Dead Don’t Speak’ as well as for following ‘Strange Sister’. The closing chapter on this album is entitled ‘Nothing Left to Lose But My Life’. It is a gloomy and heavy-hearted anthem with the title indicating the darkened blanket that wraps one’s soul.

Lucifer solidify their musical approach and trademarks without repeating what they have done earlier. The foundation of musical brilliance remains while the playing field of sound became more mature. ‘Lucifer V’ – an album with an impact.
