Review ALLUVIAL ‘Death Is but a Door’ – EP

Deathcore merchants Alluvial started in 2016 and since the band members are rooted in death metal, the band’s debut ‘The Deep Longing for Annihilation’ featured the genre ingredients. Although still being a rather young band, the compass was redirected a bit during the last years with Alluvial entering the fields of deathcore.

After two longplayers the Atlanta, Georgia based band ships with ‘Death Is but a Door’ a new EP to the records stores. A total of four songs is what this release entails and each of these tracks is a brutal musical adventure.

The start is made by a tune called ‘Bog Dweller’ and is a thundering riff assault that is combined with Kevin Muller blood-curdling growls. Alluvial spices the song up with some blasting beats while the wider parts of ‘Bog Dweller’ remains in moderate pace, a pattern that also comes to surface in ‘Fogbelt’. The latter also includes some wild twists and crashing riffs that drives the song.

The machine-like start of ‘Area Code’ is a bit of a distracting introduction before the song unveils its evil fury. Although the general pattern is similar to the first two tracks, ‘Area Code’ sound heavier and is a musical monolith. A counterpart to all these tunes is the title track. Already the clean vocals at the beginning indicate a slight shift without denying the roots of Alluvial’s sound. The title track is the most dramatic and atmospheric tune on this EP and represents the possibility of using EPs for experimenting a bit with sounds and creative idea.

‘Death Is but a Door’ is a showcases an band that found their musical direction and starts to experiment a bit with their sound without drifting away from the initial alignment.
