Eternal Evil hail from Stockholm, Sweden and belong to the youngest generation of thrash metal bands that have found their inspiration in the heyday of the genre. Bands like Slayer and Exodus are without a doubt the role models of the four-piece.
With ‘The Warriors Awakening … Brings the Unholy Slaughter!’ the Swedes have released their debut album in 2021. Now comes with ‘The Gates Beyond Mortality’ the sophomore album on the market. A total of nine songs have found a place on the record and what the guys deliver has true freight train energy.
Already with the opener ‘Depth of a New Eternity’ you can feel the approaching freight train. The acoustic intro is like a swinging of the tracks which announces what is coming. Steadily rising the tune gains intensity before with ‘Guerilla Warfare’ the locomotive roars by at full speed.
What follows is wagon after wagon loaded with tons of heavy metal, a load that is impossible to stop and even though the beginning of ‘The Astral Below’ comes across as calm and serene, Eternal Evil’s new album is overall heavy and straightforward.
Still, ‘The Gates Beyond Mortality’ doesn’t really want to kick in after all. Like the freight train metaphor, it’s song after song that rush past you and impress with their vehemence. Still, there is not that much catches a lasting attention and after a while a certain effect of saturation begins to take hold.
Overall, it can be said that ‘The Gates Beyond Mortality’ lives by the unbridled power of youth. The four-piece follows its idols without copying them completely. Nevertheless, there is still a little room for improvement in order to be able to transport the existing passion in the songs even more effectively.
