Creeper were previously unknown to me and I was surprised that the band already sold out the Roundhouse. The band, founded in 2014, celebrated the greatest triumphs in their home country, where they stormed into the top 20 of the charts.
After only two full-length albums, ‘Sanguivore’, the third release of the Brits, hits the record stores and what comes out of the speakers is well-made rock music that takes place somewhere between Meat Loaf, David Bowie and gothic.
‘Sanguivore’ is dark which can be recognized well in songs like ‘Lovers Led Astray’. That the tune can also come up with a very catchy chorus helps one to get engaged with the track.
The start of the album is a song called ‘Further Than Forver’. With the drama of the earlier Meat Loaf songs, the Brits manage to get off to a brilliant start and the fact that the opener is nine minutes long becomes a side effect. There is just so much happening that the time flies by.
70s punk roots appear on the fast and short ‘Chapel Gates’, followed by the keyboard-driven interlude ‘The Abyss’.
Continuing with synth-driven ‘Black Heaven’ which is reminiscent of the 90s, it’s again a gloomy vibe that acts as a link between the relatively varied songs.
‘Sanguivore’ ends with ‘More Than Death’ which again takes inspiration from Meat Loaf. Piano and vocals form the foundation for this powerful emotional outburst in which singer Will Gould can show what he is capable of with his voice.
As I said, I was unfamiliar with Creeper and all the more exciting it was to press the ‘start’ button, not knowing what to expect. Well, since I still consider ‘Bat Out Of Hell’ a milestone of rock music, the sound of ‘Sanguivore’ was a treat for the ears. If you like dark rock music and if you are enthusiastic about Meat Loaf’s music, you should definitely check out ‘Sanguivore’.
