Review CANNIBAL CORPSE ‚Chaos Horrific‘

Cannibal Corpse belong to the trailblazers when it comes to death metal. Since 1988 the band belongs to the spearhead of a genre they actively supported to shape. Two years after having unleashed the ‚Violence Unimagined‘‘ album the five-piece returns with ‚Chaos Horrific‘.

On their 16th longplayer, the masters of death metal continue their trip through death metal, as brutal as everybody expected them to sound like.  Cannibal Corpse pick it up where they left off with their previous release. Massive growls and perfectly interacting guitars by Eric Rutan and Rob Barrett define the sound of the band and it’s these trademarks that are also present throughout the newest offering.

With all the aggressiveness of Cannibal Corpse sound the technical aspect of the band is sometimes overlooked. More then 30 years in business allowed the band the gain a lot of experience which goes into the songwriting of each of their gore-driven anthems. Within the frame of brute death metal the band always adds a technical approach t each of their songs which allows them to redefine their sound without losing the connected to their roots.

The songs on ‚Chaos Horrific‘ also fall under this category which means that the band builds on their latest album and evolves from there.

‘Overlords of Violence’ is the first chapter of this ten-track offer and Cannibal Corpse haven’t lost anything of their brute intensity. Deep growls and blistering solo parts is what the opener offers and clarified within three minutes and eight seconds of what to expect from the rest of the album.

It’s a merciless beat that pushes ‘Frenzied Feeding’ forward before ‘Summoned for Sacrifice’ takes over. The latter has been unveiled as a single prior to the album release and it is a grinding death metal anthem in a very moderate pace. Breaks add to the entertaining factor of this metal blast and the thundering ‘Blood Blind’ takes a similar musical direction.

Cannibal Corpse shift gears with the title track. ‘Chaos Horrific’ is a riff monster that start with enormous speed and never really loses the set pace.

‘Fracture and Refracture’ is a pulverizing Cannibal Corpse song and the five-piece keeps the pace high with ‘Pitchfork Impalement’. The band delivers excellently crafted extreme metal and the two final tracks on the album doesn’t deviate from this approach. ‘Pestilential Rictus’ and the closing anthem ‘Drain You Empty’ are very relevant Cannibal Corpse songs of which the latter is a massive and rather complex track with some great twists without losing the trademarks of the typical sound of the death metal forerunners.

‚Chaos Horrific‘ is the expected brutal next release of Cannibal Corpse. Fully committed and driven by the power of death metal, the guys continue to follow their chosen direction and underline for another time why they belong to icons of death metal.
