Review STATIC ABYSS ‘Aborted from Reality’

Greg Wilkinson and Chris Reifert are the brains behind Static Abyss. The doom death formation premiered last year with an album called ‘Labyrinth of Veins’ and these days the sophomore album, ‘Aborted from Reality’ brings back massive and slo-mo riffing.

Wilkinson as well as Reifert are no rookies, and both have a common background with Autopsy. With Static Abyss the guys follow their passion for slower paced death metal that at no point loses the genre-given intensity. Songs like the massive ‘Cathedral of Vormit’ are excellent examples for death metal not only need to be fast and furious. Almost leaning towards death doom, the song is a very sinister riff monster that unfolds the embedded evilness with each note played.

‘Mind Tectacles’ takes the same route, at least in parts. After a snail-paced beginning suddenly, a break changes the entire foundation. The band shifts gears and what follows is a massive death metal strike that alternates between grooving riff power and speedy passages.

‘Poisoned Limbs’ is a one-minute whirlwind before the duo returns to the world of doom with ‘Horizon of Cremains’. Extremely deep growls by Reifert are what gives the song a malevolent expression. Again, tempo breaks change the pattern and it’s those unexpected twists which make each of these ten songs to a special trip through the realms of metal.

What strings each of these ten songs together is the embedded diabolic grin that stares at you. Fierce and furious, that’s how each of the songs unfold its full potential with some headbanging guaranteed.
