Review JOURNEY ‘Live in Concert at Lollapalooza’

Rock giants Journey played Grant Park in Chicago, IL on July 31 last year. The gig was part of the Lollapalooza festival and they performed an 18 song set which is now available for home consumption via Frontiers Music in various formats.

Journey are undoubtedly one of the greats of the rock business, delivering with a few breaks, brilliant albums since 1973. Of course, the band has also released live albums and yet this release is something special, offering a good overview of the creative output of the rock icons.

It starts with ‘Separate Ways (Worlds Apart)’ from the ‘Frontiers’ album and after ‘Only the Young’, another earlier track, the band moves on to ‘Escape’. The milestone album of the Americans contributes with six songs and considering the huge success of the record, this choice is more than obvious.

Of course, the big hits like ‘Don’t Stop Believin” and ‘Any Way You Want It’ were played. These two songs formed the finale of an impressive show. Before these hits were performed, it is songs like ‘Wheel in the Sky’ that will make fans of exquisite rock music melt away. The latter track is not unimportant in the rise of the band, as ‘Wheel in the Sky’ made the band enter the singles charts.

It is well known that Journey has a fantastic singer in Arnel Pineda, who does not have to fear a comparison with Steve Perry. Also on this live release Pineda shows the entire spectrum of his voice, which harmonizes extremely well with the virtuoso guitar sound of Neal Schon. On ‘Just the Same Way’, however, Journey veteran Jonathan Cain takes over the vocals, which is a nice twist.

Journey fans will add with ‘Live in Concert at Lollapalooza’ another release of their favorite band to their home collection and if there are actually still people who haven’t heard of Neal Schon and his bandmates, they now have the chance to catch up on lost ground.
