Review TOMBS ‘Ex Oblivion’ -EP

Tombs are based in Brooklyn, New York City and began their dark journey through the depths of post metal in 2007. The guys have a total of four albums to their credit and are releasing a new EP these days, ‘Ex Oblivion’.

‘Ex Oblivion’ includes a total of five songs. Two of these tracks are new songs, two cover songs and one remix.

The first song is ‘Ex Oblivion’ which gives the name to the release. The title track is based on a melancholic mood which, combined with a good sense for melody, can have a fascinating effect.
Next is a song that most people should know. ‘Killed By Death’ is originally by Motörhead and Tombs cover this classic. Even though the New York trio does a good job, the original is miles away.

Things get heavier with ‘Commit Suicide’. GG Allin was certainly one of the most controversial performers in the late 80s and early 90s. ‘Commit Suicide’ is one of the tracks he left behind as a legacy and Tombs interpret this aggressive punk number with vehemence and full power.

‘Sombre Ruin’, on the other hand, is the complete opposite. The doom-based song comes from the last studio album and the remix on this EP spreads real dystopia. RKGD transform the song into an oppressive sound collage before the EP comes to an end with ‘Murder Legendre’ which is anything but the sunny side of life.

Tombs have brought with their new EP a dark and oppressive mix of songs to the record stores. If you want to enjoy endless gloom this is certainly the right place.
