Review FREJA ‘Tides’

Freja is the idea of C. (Witte Wieven) and W. (Laster, Verval). The duo recorded their debut album ‘Tides’ which will be released Mid-April and comes through Babylon Doom Cult Records.

Freja has a passion for atmospheric black metal and the six songs on ‘Tides’ echo this musical hunger. The starting point for Freja is connected to the 2019 edition of the Roadburn festival in Tilburg. The two musicians were working on the commissioned piece Maalstroom and realizing a similar musical vision has been the beginning of this new project.

Freja’s debut is an exciting, blackened metal journey with songs that reflect the hellish grin of black metal as well as there are soundscapes, mostly harmonic and calmer, acting as a tension-strengthening element. These are the poles in which the six songs find a musical homebase. A song that shows the various elements of Freja very well is ‘Dust’. Clean vocals and an almost peaceful melody is what drives the song while the raging outbursts as well and the sinister beat creates a feeling of underlying darkness.

Freja has achieved with ‘Tides’ a first landmark, the beginning of something that has the potential to rise. With having the album under their belt, the next steps is waiting around the corner. Longplayer and a show at Roadburn festival 2022 could become a real springboard for the duo that started very well into their common musical adventure.

Freja, a band to be monitored.
