Review CHAOSBAY ‘Boxes’ – EP

Berlin-based Chaosbay went through a transformation during the last years. The band started more in the fields of progressive rock and metal with classic rock element being and extra spice. Slowly the band added metalcore elements to their sound and while the clean vocal parts remind of the earlier days, the metalcore moments are the explosive outbursts.

Chaosbay, that means four music students going to work and following their passion for the heavier riffs and the louder tones. After the latest full-length album ‘Asylum’ hit the shelves in 2020, the quartet worked on new material that builds the tracklist for ‘Boxes’, the new EP:

‘Boxes’ includes five songs and each of those marks a continuation towards the mentioned melodic metalcore ambition. What can be stated is, that Chaosbay delivers musical quality, a heavy sound and a rock-solid production. Each of the songs fires on all cylinders, an energy boost that is nice to get injected.

When it comes to the songs, they are well-crafted. Hooks and melodies act like a sugar-sweet attraction while the heavier moments build the counterpart. ‘Y’, already unveiled as a single, is exemplary for the direction of Chaosbay. The things is though, that one can get the feeling of having heard this kind of music quite often. It is the standard recipe for melodic metalcore that tries to combine pop-laden melodies with heavy and evil riff assault and screams.

To sum up. Unboxing ‘Boxes’ provides you with well-crafted songs that are nice to listen to and at the same time the EP doesn’t surprise with a formula outside the genre standards.
