CD review AUÐN ‘Vökudraumsins fangi’

To call AUÐN the Sólstafir of black metal is a bit too far-fetched. Nevertheless, certain parallels cannot be denied. But let’s take it one after the other.

AUÐN are based in Iceland and they have dedicated themselves to atmospheric black metal. Their music, and this is certainly a parallel to Sólstafir, seems to be very much influenced by the impressive landscape and history of Iceland.

‘Vökudraumsins fangi’ is AUÐN’s third and most mature album so far. To get an impression of what the band delivers, you should start with the opener ‘Einn um alla tíð’. Atmospheric passages with depth, seamlessly blend into fierce black metal attacks. What was just a harmonious landscape turns into a hellish volcanic eruption and the quartet provides the soundtrack for such an imaginary spectacle.

That AUÐN have the musical craftsmanship for great songs at hand can be noted in the length of the tracks. Epics with 5-6 minutes are not unusual and when you listen to the closer ‘Vökudraumsins fangi’, the title track, you realize that the band can capture the beauty of the melodies without giving up a sinister mood.

‘Vökudraumsins fangi’ is an impressive album that gives you a cold shiver running down your spine. 56 minutes are flying by and luckily there is the ‘Repeat’-button, because listening to the album once is not enough.
